Bedroom Renovation Lighting That Improves the Room

Get the lighting right and the bedroom renovation will be a success and create a lovely calm, comfortable room.

Layer Your Light Sources

Rather than choosing one lighting feature for your bedroom, there is a much better approach. Layering ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting will create a better and more versatile bedroom, as each layer of lighting can be used on its own.

Pick the Right Colour Temperature

Bulb colour makes a large difference to the relaxation factor in your bedroom. Therefore warm white bulbs are recommended (2700K-3000K). Cool white and blue light bulbs contain more energizing properties and are therefore not suitable for bedrooms.

Position Bedside Lighting Well

This wall mounted reading light has been mounted at approximately shoulder height when sitting up in bed and allows for reading in comfort without having to use a bedside lamp and cluttering up the surface of the bedside table. See also Bedroom Renovations.

Fit Dimmer Switches

A dimmer switch costs very little and is able to change up how you use a room. By lowering the amount of light in a room in the evening you signal to your body and brain that it is time to go to sleep.

Consider Underlighting

Low-level recessed lighting along the skirting of a room or beneath a floating bed creates the illusion of more space and is free from glare. Often used as night-lights, underlighting adds a sense of calm and helps to finish a room.

Maximise Natural Light

This guide to bedroom renovation lighting explained the reasons for choosing a mirror to be opposite a window and how different window dressing can help to allow light into a room during the day and maintain privacy at night.

Good lighting planning takes an hour on paper and saves you from living with the wrong choices for years.
