Do you know what Chapter 8 is and its importance?

If you have come across Chapter 8 in terms of vehicle safety, do you really know what it means?

Chapter 8 refers to the livery of a vehicle that may have to stop on the road in England for examination or work purposes. Chapter 8 compliant livery is regarded as best practice by the Department of Transportation and the minimum level necessary for safety warnings.

Chapter 8 compliance is not legally binding, however, its recommendations are taken seriously and are highly recommended to save you a nightmare in potential legal action should an accident occur to one of the vehicles in your fleet.

In terms of fleet business, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978 states that all clients, employers and employees have the responsibility to establish and maintain a safe system of work. So, what is livery compliance?

Having a compliant livery is recommended for every road but especially the high-speed motorway. All vehicles that might have to stop to carry out inspection or work must be:

equipped with a highly visible sign at the back

Signs shall consist of:

Either – Chevrons of alternate strips of retro-reflective orange / red and yellow neon not less than 150mm in width and positioned at an angle between 45 and 60 degrees horizontal or pointing upwards.

Or – A block of solid fluorescent orange / red reflective material at the rear of the vehicle as practical so it does not cover the lights, registration plate or window.
