Surprising Things You Can Clean in a Dishwasher

It’s no secret that dishwashers are one of modern life’s best inventions, but the multi-tasking appliance is capable of cleaning a lot more than plates and utensils. If you’re a little behind on spring cleaning (or just need to sanitise some of the household items that you use frequently), you can slip most many household items in with your next load of dishes or run them as a separate, empty, hot water cycle.

Some of these items are best suited for the top or utensil racks, while others might benefit from being placed inside a mesh box or in the utensil holder. Avoid placing natural-bristle brushes and items with wooden handles in the machine, though, as they could be damaged by the hot, sanitising cycle. Small plastic rubbish cans can get pretty gross and clogged with food particles, so they’re perfect candidates for a quick trip in the dishwasher. If yours have removable lids, remove them to prevent leaking during the rinse cycle and replace them before drying. Pet bowls tend to collect dust, debris and bacteria, which is why a hot water cycle is an ideal way to sanitise them, too. If you have metal or ceramic bowls, consider adding a cup of baking soda to your load to prevent rusting.

Dishwasher cleaners like baking soda or vinegar can also be used to clean the interior of your appliance. Unlock and remove both the upper and lower racks, as well as the spray arm if possible, and wipe down all surfaces, paying special attention to any hard-water deposits or grime in the cracks of the control panel and door gasket.
