Finding your Dream Job

Finding a job that you enjoy, and you can do well can be tough. Many people end up leaving school not having any idea of what they want to do. Some people then head to further education hoping that it will become clear, only to completely change direction. It is never too late to get out there and find the job of your dreams, so if you have decided that now is the time, here are a few ways to find the right career for you…

What sort of job role suits your personality?  Your personality plays a big part in the type of job that is suitable for you. For example, if you are quite an outgoing person, something that is largely solitary might not provide you with the interaction that you crave. You might like excitement, or you might prefer something that is more routine. Think about your personality and likes and dislikes that you have to help you to start narrowing down what sort of jobs suit you.

What skills do you have that you can apply to jobs? You can gain skills anywhere – this could be in the workplace, or it could be through extra-curricular activities and hobbies, or even at home. Things like budgeting skills and teamwork are not necessarily things that you learn at work. Think about all of the skills that you have gained in all areas of your life, and what you are good at.

Can you get some training and experience? If you like the idea of a particular career, but you have no experience of doing it, then it can be a good idea to try to get some work experience. Ask around and see if you will be able to do some work experience and get a feel for the job. Another way to get experience of a range of different types of jobs is to do some voluntary work for a charity in an area that you are interested in.
